Uparatna: The Complete Guide to Substitute Gemstones

Uparatna substitute gemstones for every planet — Tushar Gems guide

Published by Tushar Gems & Jewellery Pvt. Ltd. — Gurugram & Delhi | Natural · Certified · Trusted | Since 1998

An astrologer prescribes a 5 ratti untreated Pukhraj. You check the price and your heart sinks. What now — buy a smaller stone, buy a treated one, or wait years?

Vedic tradition has a fourth answer, and it is older than any of those three: the uparatna, or substitute stone. Each planet has secondary stones associated with it, natural and far more affordable than the primary ratna.

Used honestly, uparatna are a sensible way to begin. Sold dishonestly, they are how people end up paying sapphire prices for topaz. Here is the full picture.

The substitutes, planet by planet

Planet Primary stone Commonly used uparatna
Sun Ruby (Manik) Red Garnet, Sunstone
Moon Pearl (Moti) Moonstone
Mars Red Coral (Moonga) Carnelian, Red Jasper
Mercury Emerald (Panna) Green Onyx, Peridot
Jupiter Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) Citrine (Sunela), Yellow Topaz
Venus Diamond (Heera) White Sapphire (Safed Pukhraj), Opal, White Zircon
Saturn Blue Sapphire (Neelam) Iolite (Kaka Neeli), Amethyst
Rahu Hessonite (Gomed) Agate
Ketu Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) Quartz Cat's Eye, Turquoise

Lists vary between traditions and between astrologers, so treat this as the common ground rather than the only version. Venus is a special case: because diamond is worn at only 0.5–1.5 ratti while white sapphire and opal follow the normal weight rule, those two are what most people actually wear for Shukra — and they are what we stock.

What a substitute is — and is not

It is a genuine natural gemstone, traditionally linked to the same planet, worn on the same day, in the same metal and on the same finger as the primary stone.

It is not the same stone under another name. Tradition considers the primary ratna stronger, and the market prices it that way because it is rarer. Anyone promising you identical results from an uparatna is selling, not advising.

Because uparatna are considered gentler, astrologers often recommend a larger weight than they would for the primary stone. Ask specifically — the ratti for a substitute is usually not the same number.

Where the mis-selling happens

Every one of these pairs is exploited somewhere in the market:

  • Citrine or yellow topaz sold as Pukhraj. Different minerals, a fraction of the price.
  • Iolite or amethyst sold as Neelam. Both are legitimate Saturn substitutes — at substitute prices.
  • Quartz cat's eye sold as Lehsunia. True Lehsunia is chrysoberyl; quartz is a substitute.
  • White zircon sold as white sapphire. Genuine stones, entirely different value.

The protection is the same in every case: the certificate's species line. It names the mineral, not the trade name.

When a substitute makes sense

  • The primary stone is genuinely out of budget at the prescribed weight
  • You want to begin now rather than wait a year
  • Your astrologer has suggested a trial before committing to an expensive stone
  • The planet needs only mild support according to the chart

When it does not

  • When you can afford a smaller, genuine primary stone — discuss this option with your astrologer first
  • When the seller is vague about what the stone actually is
  • When the price matches the primary stone's price

Wearing an uparatna

The rules follow the planet, not the stone. A citrine for Jupiter is worn on a Thursday, in gold or panchdhatu, on the index finger, after being energised with Jupiter's mantra — exactly as a Pukhraj would be.

Open-back setting, correct hand (right for men, left for women), and the usual care for the specific mineral: amethyst fades in strong sunlight, opal dislikes heat and dryness, moonstone is softer than it looks.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upgrade later?
Yes. Many customers begin with an uparatna and move to the primary stone when budget allows. Ask your astrologer about timing the change.

Do substitutes need certification?
Absolutely. A certificate is how you know your citrine is citrine and not glass or heated amethyst.

Is wearing both the primary and the substitute better?
Not a standard practice. One stone per planet is the norm.

Are semi-precious stones the same as uparatna?
Not quite. Semi-precious describes a market category; uparatna is an astrological role. Some stones are both.
