What is a ratti, and how is it different from a carat?

A ratti is the traditional Indian unit used in astrological practice. One ratti is approximately 0.91 carat, so a 5-carat stone is roughly 5.5 ratti. Gem laboratories certify in carats because that is the international standard, while astrologers prescribe in ratti. Every listing on this site shows both, so nothing is lost in translation.

How many ratti gemstone should I wear?

The common thumb rule is about one ratti per twelve kilograms of body weight, which puts most adults between 3 and 7 ratti. The stone matters too: coral and pearl are usually worn heavier, cat's eye and sapphire lighter, and substitute stones heavier than the primary stone they replace. A specific astrological reading always takes priority over the thumb rule.

Certification and authenticity

What does government lab certified mean?

It means a laboratory recognised by the Government of India has tested the stone and issued a report confirming its identity, weight, dimensions, and any treatment it has undergone. Our stones carry reports from IIGJ Research & Laboratories (GJEPC India), the International Gemological Center (IGC) and other approved laboratories.

How do I check whether a gemstone is real?

The reliable method is the certificate: match the report number on the paper to the number quoted for the stone, and check that the weight and dimensions on the report match what you have. Home tests are unreliable. On this site the report number appears in the product title itself, so you can verify it before you order.

Are treated gemstones fake?

No. Heating sapphires and rubies, oiling emeralds and colour-treating topaz are normal, permanent and accepted worldwide — almost every coloured stone on the market has had something done to it. What is not acceptable is hiding it. Untreated stones are rarer and cost more, and every listing here states the treatment from its certificate.

What is the difference between natural and lab-grown gemstones?

A lab-grown stone has the same chemistry as a natural one but was crystallised in a factory over weeks rather than in the earth over millions of years. It is not fake, but it has no astrological standing in Vedic practice and is worth a fraction of the price. We sell natural stones only, confirmed on every certificate.

Choosing your stone

Which gemstone should I wear for my rashi?

Each planet governs one primary stone, and your sign inherits its stone from its ruling planet. See the full table on our Rashi Ratan page. Most Vedic astrologers work from the ascendant (lagna) rather than the sun sign, and also weigh the current mahadasha — which is why a sun-sign table is a starting point, not a prescription.

Can I wear a gemstone without consulting an astrologer?

For healing crystals such as rose quartz, amethyst, pyrite and tiger eye, yes — they are not tied to a planet in the classical system. For the nine Navratna stones, particularly Blue Sapphire, Hessonite and Cat's Eye, traditional practice advises a chart reading first and a short trial period before wearing the stone permanently.

Can I wear more than one gemstone together?

Some combinations are traditionally considered compatible and others are not — Neelam is generally not worn with Moti or Manik, for example. Ask before combining stones; we will tell you honestly, including when the answer is that you do not need a second stone.

What if the recommended stone is beyond my budget?

Vedic practice accepts substitutes (upratna), worn in a heavier weight: Iolite or Amethyst for Shani, Citrine for Guru, Green Onyx or Peridot for Budh, Moonstone for Chandra, Garnet for Surya and Mangal, and White Zircon or White Sapphire for Shukra.

Wearing and care

Does the gemstone need to touch my skin?

In traditional practice, yes — which is why astrological rings are made with an open back. All our settings are made that way.

Which finger and which day?

Ring finger for Ruby (Sunday) and Red Coral (Tuesday); index finger for Yellow Sapphire (Thursday); middle finger for Blue Sapphire, Hessonite and Cat's Eye (Saturday); little finger for Emerald (Wednesday) and Pearl (Monday) — on the working hand, after the ring has been energised.

How do I clean my gemstone?

A soft damp cloth is enough for most stones. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners entirely for emerald, opal, pearl, coral, turquoise and lapis, and keep porous stones away from perfume, oils and harsh soap.

Yes. Loose gemstones are one of a kind, so every image on this site is a photograph of that exact stone, not a catalogue picture.
