Iolite
About iolite
Iolite (Neeli or Kaka Neeli) is the most widely accepted substitute for Blue Sapphire (Neelam) and is worn for Shani (Saturn). A natural cordierite with a violet-blue colour and strong pleochroism — it shows different shades from different angles — it is favoured by those who want Saturn's stone at a fraction of a sapphire's cost. Every Iolite here is 100% natural, government lab certified and priced per ratti.
Why Iolite instead of Neelam
Fine Blue Sapphire runs into lakhs, while a good certified Iolite of the same weight costs a small fraction of that. In Vedic practice Neeli is a recognised upratna for Shani, which makes it the sensible first step for anyone who wants to try Saturn's stone before committing to a sapphire — particularly during sade sati or a Shani mahadasha.
Iolite FAQ
Answers to the questions our customers ask us most
How many ratti Iolite should I wear?
Because it is a substitute stone, Iolite is generally worn heavier than Neelam — commonly 6 to 12 ratti for adults, subject to your astrologer's reading.
Which day, finger and metal?
Traditionally set in silver or panchdhatu and worn on the middle finger of the working hand, first worn on a Saturday evening after energising.
How is Iolite different from Blue Sapphire?
Iolite is a softer, lighter mineral with a violet cast and visible colour shift as you turn it; sapphire is a corundum, harder and denser, with a more uniform blue. The certificate on every listing states exactly which species you are buying.
