The Navratna Ring: What It Is, and Who It's For

Navratna ring — the nine gemstones in their traditional order | Tushar Gems

Published by Tushar Gems & Jewellery Pvt. Ltd. — Gurugram & Delhi | Natural · Certified · Trusted | Since 1998

The Navratna ring is the one piece of astrological jewellery almost everyone has seen — nine stones set together, a ruby in the middle, a rainbow of colours around it. It is also the piece most people misunderstand.

It is not a shortcut that gives you the benefit of all nine stones at once. It has a different purpose entirely.

The nine stones and their order

Navratna means nine gems. The arrangement is fixed by tradition, not by the jeweller's taste: ruby sits at the centre for the Sun, and the other eight surround it in the order of the planets.

Stone Planet Position
Ruby (Manik) Sun Centre
Diamond (Heera) Venus East
Pearl (Moti) Moon South-east
Red Coral (Moonga) Mars South
Hessonite (Gomed) Rahu South-west
Blue Sapphire (Neelam) Saturn West
Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) Ketu North-west
Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) Jupiter North
Emerald (Panna) Mercury North-east

Regional traditions vary slightly in the exact layout, but ruby at the centre is constant. In many navratna pieces made today the Venus position is set with white sapphire rather than diamond — the two are both Venus stones, and white sapphire keeps the piece affordable.

Why it does not break the combination rules

We have written before about gemstone pairs that tradition advises against — Neelam with Manik, Moonga with Panna. The navratna contains every one of those pairs, and yet it is considered auspicious.

The traditional reasoning is that the navratna is not worn to strengthen any single planet. It is worn as a balanced piece: all nine planets acknowledged together in their correct order, none singled out. The stones are usually small, and the intention is harmony and protection rather than remedy.

That is a completely different purpose from a prescribed 5 ratti Neelam, and it is why the two are not alternatives to each other.

Who it suits

  • People who want a traditional, auspicious piece without a specific planetary remedy
  • Those whose chart shows no single planet clearly in need of support — or several that conflict
  • Gifting, weddings and family heirlooms, where a navratna is a long-standing custom
  • People who simply want to wear something meaningful without going through a full remedial process

If your astrologer has prescribed a specific stone at a specific weight, the navratna does not replace it. Ask which of the two you actually need — sometimes the answer is both, on different fingers.

What to check before buying one

A navratna needs nine stones, which is exactly why quality varies so wildly.

  1. Are all nine genuine and natural? This is the most common shortcut — glass, synthetics and dyed stones hiding among the real ones.
  2. Certification. Ask what documentation covers the stones. A reputable seller will be clear about what is certified and how.
  3. Correct order. If the layout is wrong, the piece is decorative rather than traditional.
  4. Setting quality. Nine small stones means many prongs. Poor setting is why navratna pieces lose stones.
  5. Metal. Gold and panchdhatu are the usual choices; panchdhatu is the traditional compromise when the stones belong to different metals.

Wearing a navratna

Because it represents all nine planets rather than one, it does not follow a single planet's day. Traditionally it is first worn on an auspicious day or a Sunday morning, after being cleansed and energised. Rings, pendants and bracelets are all common.

Your astrologer may give specific guidance for your chart — follow that over any general rule.

Caring for it

A navratna contains the softest gems in the navratna family alongside the hardest. Pearl and coral scratch easily, emerald chips, sapphire is tough. That mix means:

  • Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners
  • Wipe with a soft damp cloth only
  • Keep it away from perfume, chemicals and prolonged sunlight
  • Check the prongs annually

Frequently asked questions

Can anyone wear a navratna?
It is generally considered suitable for most people, which is part of its appeal. If your chart has a strong affliction, ask an astrologer first.

Can I wear it with my prescribed stone?
Often yes, and this is worth confirming with your astrologer rather than assuming.

Are the small stones effective?
Tradition treats the navratna as a balanced piece rather than a weight-based remedy, so the logic of prescribed ratti does not apply in the same way.

Is a cheap navratna worth buying?
If the stones are not genuine, you are buying costume jewellery in a traditional shape. Ask what is in it.
