People spend weeks choosing the stone and about four seconds choosing the metal — usually by asking which one is cheaper.

In Vedic astrology the metal is not a frame. It is considered part of how the stone works, which is why each planet has a prescribed metal. Here is how to choose, and what to do when budget and tradition disagree.

The prescribed metal for each stone

Gemstone Planet Traditional metal
Ruby (Manik) Sun Gold or Panchdhatu
Pearl (Moti) Moon Silver
Red Coral (Moonga) Mars Copper, Gold or Panchdhatu
Emerald (Panna) Mercury Silver
Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) Jupiter Gold or Panchdhatu
White Sapphire / Opal Venus White gold, platinum or silver
Blue Sapphire (Neelam) Saturn Silver or Panchdhatu
Hessonite (Gomed) Rahu Silver
Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) Ketu Silver

Notice the pattern: the warm, benefic planets take gold; Saturn and the shadow planets take silver. Panchdhatu sits in the middle.

What panchdhatu actually is

Panchdhatu means five metals — traditionally an alloy of gold, silver, copper, zinc and iron, in proportions that vary by maker. It has been used in Indian temple craft and jewellery for centuries.

For gemstone rings it does two useful jobs:

  • It is the traditional choice when a chart allows either gold or silver, or when the astrologer leaves the metal open
  • It brings the cost of the setting down dramatically, so your budget goes into the stone rather than the ring

That second point is the one we make most often at the counter. If a choice is between a good stone in panchdhatu and a weaker stone in gold, tradition and common sense both point the same way: put the money in the stone.

Gold, silver, panchdhatu — practical differences

Gold Silver Panchdhatu
Cost Highest Low Low
Durability Excellent; 18k holds stones well Softer; prongs wear faster Good; harder than pure silver
Maintenance Minimal Tarnishes; needs polishing May darken over time
Skin sensitivity Usually well tolerated Usually well tolerated Contains copper and other metals
Resale value Retains metal value Low Low

The setting matters as much as the metal

Whatever metal you choose, an astrological ring should have an open back, so the stone sits in direct contact with the skin. A closed setting is easier to make and looks tidier, which is why some sellers default to it — check before you pay.

Two more things worth asking for:

  • Prong strength. Open-back settings expose more of the stone, so prongs do more work. Soft, thin prongs on silver are the usual reason a stone goes missing.
  • Correct sizing. A ring that spins or has to be forced comes off "just for today" and never goes back on.

If you are allergic to a metal

Some people react to copper or to nickel in alloys. Tell your jeweller before the ring is made — there is usually a workable alternative, such as a higher-purity option or a different permitted metal for that planet. Do not simply stop wearing the ring.

Caring for the setting

  • Silver: polish with a silver cloth; avoid dips if the stone is soft or treated
  • Panchdhatu: wipe dry after washing; slight darkening is normal
  • Gold: warm water and mild soap
  • All metals: have the prongs checked once a year

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear a stone in the wrong metal?
Tradition treats the metal as part of the remedy. If gold is prescribed and out of reach, ask your astrologer about panchdhatu rather than switching on your own.

Is panchdhatu lower quality?
No. It is a traditional alloy with its own long history, not a budget imitation of gold.

Can two stones share one ring?
Only if both stones and both metals suit the chart. Usually separate rings are cleaner.

Does white gold count as silver?
They are different metals. For Venus stones both are commonly accepted; for Moon and Saturn stones, ask specifically.
