Heat Treatment: Stones are heated to extreme temperatures (up to 1800°C) to dissolve inclusions and enhance colour. This is done on over 95% of commercial Sapphires and Rubies.
Fracture Filling: Cracks are filled with glass, resin, or oil to improve clarity (common in Emeralds and Rubies).
Beryllium Diffusion: A chemical is diffused into the stone to artificially change its colour.
Irradiation: Radiation is used to alter colour in stones like Blue Topaz and certain Sapphires.

These treatments are widely accepted in the jewellery industry for ornamental purposes. But for astrological use, they are a serious problem.

Why Treated Gemstones Lose Astrological Value

Vedic astrology and Jyotish gem therapy are based on the principle that natural gemstones carry specific cosmic vibrations aligned with the nine planets (Navagrahas). These vibrations are stored within the stone's crystal lattice — formed over millions of years deep within the earth.

Relatively more commonly found unheated compared to Blue Sapphire, but diffusion-treated Yellow Sapphires exist. Always insist on a lab certificate confirming no treatment.

Emerald (Panna)

Nearly all Emeralds have some degree of oil or resin filling. A "minor" or "insignificant" treatment is sometimes acceptable, but heavily oiled Emeralds lose potency for Mercury remedies.

How to Verify: The Importance of Certification

The only reliable way to know if a gemstone is truly unheated and untreated is through a laboratory certificate from a reputed institution:

SSEF (Swiss Gemmological Institute)

The certificate will explicitly state: "No indications of heating" or "No indications of clarity enhancement."

The Price Difference — And Why It Is Worth It

Unheated, untreated gemstones typically cost 3 to 10 times more than their treated equivalents of the same size and colour. This premium reflects their extreme rarity in nature.

However, if you are wearing a gemstone for astrological purposes, a treated stone is essentially decorative jewellery, not a planetary remedy. The extra investment in a genuine unheated stone is not a luxury — it is a necessity for results.
