7 Signs You Are Being Sold a Fake Gemstone

7 signs you are being sold a fake gemstone - Tushar Gems

Published by Tushar Gems & Jewellery Pvt. Ltd. — Gurugram & Delhi | Natural · Certified · Trusted | Since 1998

Most people who buy a fake gemstone never find out. The stone looks right, the ring fits, and nobody ever sends it to a lab. That is exactly why the market for glass, synthetics and mislabelled stones survives.

The good news: you rarely need a microscope to protect yourself. Almost every bad sale shows its hand in the conversation, the price or the paperwork before the stone is ever examined. Here are the seven signs we see most often.

1. The price is too good for the description

Fine natural gemstones are priced by a global market. Nobody sells an untreated Ceylon blue sapphire or a clean Zambian emerald at a fraction of the going rate out of generosity.

When a price is dramatically lower than everyone else's, one of three things is usually true: the stone is treated, the stone is synthetic, or the stone is something else entirely. The description is the part that is wrong — not the price.

2. The "certificate" comes from the seller

A card printed on the shop's own letterhead, with a photo and a stamp, is a guarantee card — not a laboratory report. A genuine certificate comes from an independent laboratory, carries a unique report number, and can be verified on that laboratory's website.

Be equally wary of a "lab" you cannot find online, or one that operates from the same address as the shop.

3. The stone is large, flawless and cheap

Natural gemstones form inside the earth under messy conditions. They almost always carry inclusions — tiny crystals, needles, feathers. A completely clean, large, bright stone at a modest price is far more likely to be glass or lab-grown than a lucky find.

Flawless is not impossible. Flawless and cheap together is the warning sign.

4. The name is doing the selling

Some of the most common mis-sales are naming games rather than outright fakes:

  • Yellow topaz or citrine sold as Pukhraj (yellow sapphire)
  • Quartz or glass cat's eye sold as Lehsunia (chrysoberyl)
  • Lead-glass-filled ruby sold as Manik
  • Dyed or reconstructed material sold as Moonga

In each case the certificate's species line tells the truth. Read the mineral name, not just the stone's trade name.

5. Vague answers about treatment and origin

Ask two direct questions: Is this stone treated? and Where is it from? An honest seller answers both plainly and shows you where the certificate says so. "All stones are treated nowadays", "origin doesn't matter" or "this is premium quality" are not answers.

6. You are not allowed to verify

A genuine seller has nothing to lose from you checking the report number online or taking the stone to an independent lab. Hesitation, excuses or sudden conditions ("the offer is only valid if you pay now") are a signal in themselves.

7. Pressure instead of explanation

"This muhurat is ending today." "Only one piece left." "Astrologer ji has specially reserved it for you." Urgency is the oldest sales tool in the gemstone trade. A stone you will wear for years deserves a decision that can wait a day.

What about the home tests?

You will find dozens of videos promising to tell real from fake at home — dropping the stone in water, rubbing it on cloth, scratching glass with it, checking whether milk changes colour. We get asked about these every week, so here is the honest answer: none of them are reliable.

  • Many simulants pass these tests as easily as the real stone does
  • Scratch tests can permanently damage a genuine gemstone
  • Heat or chemical "tests" can ruin treated or organic gems like pearl and coral

Real identification needs refractive index, specific gravity and magnification — which is what a laboratory report records. That is why the certificate matters more than any trick.

The simple checklist before you pay

  1. Independent laboratory report with a unique number
  2. Report verified on the lab's website
  3. Species line says natural and names the correct mineral
  4. Treatment line is filled in, in words
  5. Weight and measurements on the report match the stone in your hand
  6. A price that makes sense for everything the report says

Frequently asked questions

Is a synthetic gemstone the same as a fake?
A lab-grown stone has the same chemistry as the natural one and is honest when sold as lab-grown. It becomes a problem only when sold as natural — and tradition does not accept it for astrological wear.

Is a treated stone fake?
No. Heated sapphire or oiled emerald is genuine. Treatment only becomes deception when it is not disclosed or when you pay an untreated price for it.

I already bought a stone. How do I check it?
Verify the report number online. If there is no report, an independent test costs far less than wearing the wrong stone for years.

Bring your stone, we will check it with you

If you are unsure about a stone you already own, bring it and its paperwork to our store. We will walk you through what the report says — no obligation to buy anything. Every stone we sell is IIGJ certified, with the treatment status stated in writing.
