Kundli Basics: What Your Astrologer Checks Before Recommending a Stone

We say the same sentence at our counter several times a day: we cannot recommend a stone without your birth details. Customers usually nod — and then ask why a kundli matters when a rashi chart is available free on any website.
It is a fair question. Here is the answer, in plain language, with no astrology background assumed. You will not learn to read a chart from one article, but you will understand what your astrologer is looking at — and that is enough to stop you buying the wrong stone.
The three things a kundli needs
Date of birth, time of birth, and place of birth. All three, because the chart is a snapshot of the sky from one spot on earth at one moment.
Time matters most for the part people skip. A few hours' difference changes the ascendant — and the ascendant changes almost everything that follows.
Rashi, lagna and the difference that matters
| Term | What it is | What it tells the astrologer |
|---|---|---|
| Rashi (moon sign) | The sign the Moon occupied at birth | A starting point, and what most "free gemstone by zodiac" charts use |
| Lagna (ascendant) | The sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact minute of birth | Which planet rules which house in your chart — the foundation of the reading |
| Sun sign | The sign the Sun occupied | Used in Western astrology; not the basis of Vedic gemstone prescription |
This single distinction explains why two people with the same rashi can need two entirely different stones.
Houses: why the same planet can be good or bad
A chart has twelve houses, each covering an area of life — self, wealth, siblings, home, children, work, marriage, and so on. Every house is ruled by a planet, and which planet rules which house depends on your lagna.
So a planet is not simply benefic or malefic. In your chart it becomes a functional benefic or malefic depending on what it rules. Saturn, the planet people fear most, is a favourable planet for some ascendants — which is exactly why a blanket "Neelam is dangerous" is as unhelpful as "Neelam is powerful".
Dasha: the timing layer
Vedic astrology runs on planetary periods called dasha — long stretches of years ruled by one planet, with shorter sub-periods (antardasha) inside them.
This is the layer that free online charts almost never give you, and it is often what decides the recommendation. A stone for the planet whose period you are currently running is a very different decision from one for a planet whose period ends in three months.
Putting it together: how a recommendation is actually made
- Cast the chart from date, time and place
- Identify the lagna and which planets rule which houses
- Look at where each planet sits, its strength and its aspects
- Check the running mahadasha and antardasha
- Decide which planet needs support — and which must not be strengthened
- Prescribe stone, weight, metal, finger and day
Step five is the one that gets skipped in a hurry, and it is the one that protects you.
What to bring to a consultation
- Date, exact time and place of birth — from a birth certificate or hospital record if possible
- A list of stones you already wear, including gifts and inherited pieces
- Any earlier astrologer's note, if you have one
- The specific area you are concerned about — work, marriage, studies, family
If your birth time is genuinely unknown, say so. Astrologers have methods for working with an approximate time, and an honest "I am not sure" is far better than a guess presented as fact.
Frequently asked questions
Can a free online kundli be used?
Online software casts the chart fine. The reading — deciding which planet to support — is the part that needs a person.
Do I need an astrologer, or can you recommend?
We offer a free kundli consultation at both stores. For complex charts or major life decisions, a dedicated astrologer you trust is worth the time.
My family astrologer said one stone, another said a different one. Who is right?
Different schools weigh factors differently. Ask each to explain the reasoning — the explanation usually makes the choice clear.
Is a rashi-based recommendation useless?
Not useless — incomplete. It is a reasonable starting point and a poor final answer.
Bring your details, not just your budget
Walk into either store with your birth details and we will go through the chart with you before showing you a single stone. The consultation is free, and there is no obligation to buy.
