Ravi Kapoor founded Tushar Gems in 1998 and built it without inherited capital into a two-store gemstone house in Gurugram and New Delhi. Over 28 years in the gemstone trade, he has focused on one idea: a customer should be able to verify what they buy.

Today he leads Tushar Gems and Jewellery Pvt Ltd, its sealed-pack gemstone brand Gemwix, and a growing body of work as a speaker, author and podcast host for first-generation entrepreneurs. He is also a member of BNI Gurgaon (Ignite chapter), part of Business Network International.

The journey

Ravi Kapoor entered the gemstone trade in 1998 with no family business to inherit and no established name to lean on. What began as a trading desk in Karol Bagh, New Delhi grew, sale by sale, into Tushar Gems and Jewellery Pvt Ltd — with a showroom at Gold Souk Mall in Gurugram, a store in Karol Bagh, an online catalogue of certified loose stones and an in-house jewellery workshop.

“When you start with nothing, your word is your only capital,” he says. “I learned early that a customer forgives a high price. They never forgive being misled.”

In 2025 he launched Gemwix, a sealed-pack gemstone brand. Every Gemwix pack carries an IIGJ lab certificate with a report number buyers can verify online, and the price is printed on the pack. Jewellers and astrologers can stock Gemwix through its partner programme.

How he runs the business

  • Proof travels with the stone. Natural gemstones are sold with lab certificates, IIGJ government-lab certified stones are clearly marked, and the report number is shown on the product so customers can check it themselves. “If your customer has to take your word for everything, you are asking for blind trust. Give them a way to check, and trust follows on its own.”
  • Say the uncomfortable thing first. Untreated and treated or heated stones are kept separate, and every customer is told which one they are buying. “Treatment is not the problem. Hiding it is.”
  • One price for everyone. Gemwix carries a printed MRP so every customer sees the same number. “A price that changes with the customer’s face is the fastest way to lose their trust.”
  • Give before you ask. Tushar Gems offers a free gemstone recommendation with no obligation to buy.
